My Top Ten Couples of ElfQuest

PIKE and SKOT
If you've read my Survivor:ElfQuest, then you know I'm completely obsessed with these two. They're by far, in my estimation, the sweetest of all couples. I would guess they bonded pretty early after the Original Quest ended - probably mourning Vaya's death together, and went on from there. Krim is of course part of this three-mating, but she seems to play with Skot much more than with Pike. And Skot, well, he plays with Pike much more than with Krim. It's my firmest belief that Pike gave Skot his soulname - if Skot didn't find it himself. Why else would Pike see a vision of Skot's death while Pike was at Howling Rock?

TEIR and EMBER
From the moment I saw Teir, I was rooting for him and Ember. Ember's been pretty damn mean to him in their on-again-off-again courtship, but by the end of the Shadowstalker cycle they seem inseperable. Forty years later, they're completely in love, and a mental bond between them strongly hints at an imminent Recognition. Teir's really hoping for Recognition, as he desperately wants to have a cub with his Firehair, and Ember's clearly longing for eyes-meet-eyes, but she's willing to wait until Recognition comes naturally, rather than trying to force it with Mender's help. I really couldn't decide which pic to put up for them, so click here for the alternate pic of them.

VENKA and ZHANTEE
Zhantee pined away for Leetah while she was lost in the future, but it looks like he found more than a small measure of solace with Venka. They're seen together all the time in KoBW and Dreamtime. By the time of the Shards War it seems that while Zhantee's feelings for Leetah had not diminished, he had formed an equally strong bond with Venka. Even dead, Zhantee managed to shield Venka from an attack by Grohmul Djun. I'd like to think his spirit is going to tag along with her in the Frozen Mountains.

SHALE and EYES HIGH
The rumours are that Eyes High and Shale didn't get along quite so well until the birth of Skywise, due to Eyes High being such a loner. But in Wolfrider you can clearly see them arm-in-arm at least nine years before Recognition strikes. Clearly they've been lovemates for a long time, even if Eyes High likes to be alone a little more than Shale does. The only way I can bear Eyes High's death is knowing Shale's waiting for her with the other spirits at Father Tree Holt.

DART AND KIMO
Now that's love. A great shot of Dart holding the wounded Kimo in Searcher as these two climb ever high on my chart. Rumours that the two have broken up are quite unfounded, and the two lifemates are clearly closer than ever (watch for them reclining shirtless together at one point in Searcher and wonder what they were up to). As the only genuine male-male couple in the EQ, they hold a special place in my heart. It's about time we had two boys together without a woman to "balance" them out and give them breeding access. Score one for "Queer as Elves!". Adoring Kimo has gone a long way towards perking Dart up from the gloomy proto-Strongbow he was becoming, and now that Kimo's a selfshaper, Dart will never have to look far for a wolf-friend again. Rock on, you two. And I cast my vote for a verrr-rrry PG-13 plate of them for the next lovemates calendar (yum!)

PIKE and VAYA
Hey - Pike's on here twice! That's right, he's just that hot. Skot might never have established such a foothold with Pike had Vaya never died. Then again, they might have formed a threesome and just pushed Krim out of the way (she always seems like the odd one out anyway). Pike and Vaya fell hard for each other right from the start, and had a good time together at the Go-Back orgy. Pike tried to send to her when she was captured by Guttlekraw, but she locked him out, unwilling to share the pain of her imminent death with him. True love, I'd like to think. Why didn't we ever see Pike thinking back about Vaya? Everyone else got to have little flashbacks to the Palace War.

TYLDAK and DEWSHINE
I think Dewshine was just plain silly to turn down that beautiful bird. Yeah, he doesn't have hands, yeah, his costume choice is severely limited, but as Kahvi says, what he has more than makes up for it - especially when you're Recognized to him and can see him in all his babish-ness. He's certainly a better bet that (ech) Scouter. (Even if you disagree with me pre-Hidden Years, you have to admit his ass-ish-ness skyrocketed during Wild Hunt.)  Couldn't Tyldak have joined the Wolfriders and lifemated with Dewshine? Can't you just see him teaching baby Windkin how to fly? After all, even Windkin thinking of Tyldak more than he thinks about Scouter.

ONE-EYE and CLEARBROOK
I've always felt One-Eye the better of Clearbrook's two lifemates. Treestump always struck me as an opportunist, sneaking in right after One-Eye died (he was giving her the eye before the week was out - what, was he just waiting for a single female to become available?). One-Eye (formerly Woodhue) and Clearbrook had two cubs and several hundred years together as lifemates. I'm of the school that firmly believes that One-Eye should have come back to his body when Clearbrook called him. (I'm also harbouring thoughts that One-Eye actually went into Treestump's body when he came out of the Palace.)

YUN and WAVECATCHER
They aren't a real couple, I know, but I'm rooting for them. Yun's being obsessed with water ever since she saw Wavecatcher, and once he saw her, Wavecatcher felt real hope again after being alone in the Foreevergreen lakes for so long. There is still a chance Windkin might take Wavecatcher to the Palace and then to the New Land. Wavecatcher's intense interest Yun's held out for twelve years, while makes me suspect there's a little incomplete Recognition going on. Final Quest, maybe? I'm certainly looking forward to the prospect of them meeting again rather than seeing Sunstream meet Brill.

SHUNA and BEE
Hey, the humans have infiltrated my list. Damn primates, they're everywhere these days. It wasn't easy to get a shot of these two standing next to each other, let me tell you (except in those shots where Shuna is all bloodied by jealous Nunkah, and I didn't want to use those). Infatuated with Shuna since the moment she arrived, Bee got his chance when Shuna served Nunkah with a bloody nose and a quickie divorce. Now, after a wedding at Father Tree Holt, the two of them are off questing together. Why did they displace Rayek and Winnowill on my list? Because Bee's so delightfully a-typical for a human, and because after all she's been through, Shuna really needs someone to worship the ground she walks on.

STILL ON PROBATION: NIGHTFALL and REDLANCE
I've always been rather suspicious of their "open-door" policy to lovemates - especially letting Cutter tree with them during those 500 years. And I'm not alone out there in thinking Nightfall has gotten really weird lately. They seem to have drifted away from the passion they used to share, or perhaps the writers are just ignoring them these days. Frankly, by Hidden Years Nightfall seems to care for Cutter more than for Redlance. So, I am therefore putting them on probation. Shape up you two, and let's see a full mini-story of endless monogamy. An alternate title for these two could well be "Cutest Couple Better Treated in Fanfiction." EQ fans seem to know that a cute little Nightfall addicted to Redlance is a lot better than a buff vixen Nightfall who worships Cutter's footprints. As for the comics, let's hope that someday soon we'll see them have a second honeymoon.

CUTEST FLING IN ELFQUEST: YUN and MENDER
I don't see this couple as a long-term success, but I love the way they're often seen cuddling off the corner of a group shot. I always had a grudge against Mender, but I'm starting to soften on him since the end of the Lehrigen cycle in Wild Hunt. I think Yun deserves a better long-term match than Mender (he doesn't seem like the type to settle down anyway), but until Wavecatcher comes along, I think she and Mender make really sweet casual lovemates.
