THE PALACE OF THE HIGH ONES
The very first "holt" of the elves that colonized Abode. It was shapechanged,
abandoned, revived, shapechanged again, destroyed, rebuilt and shapechanged
again in the course of its 20,000 years on the World of Two Moons. Currently
it's flying between the worlds, guided by Skywise and Timmain. Its Masters
were, in order, Timmain, Rayek, and Skywise (it looks like Cutter is Master
of the Palace by the Future Quest era, though he might just be a temp.)
THE TUNDRA AND TAIGA FORESTS
During Rahnee's time as chief, the Wolfriders followed the herds of
click-deer, journeying up into the open tundra, then back into the forests
again. They never stayed on in one place for too long before moving again.
THE EVERWOOD
During the early years of Two-Spear's (the Swift-Spear's) reign, the
Wolfriders put down their first roots in the Everwood, a vast forest between
the Muchcold Water and the plains to the east of what would become Father
Tree holt. When the tribe split after the Two-Spear/Skyfire challenge,
Two-Spear left the Everwood while Skyfire and her Wolfriders remained.
THE
HIGH ONES' THRONE CHAMBER
Two-Spear made this rockshaped chamber his holt during the first twenty-four
years after his split from the Wolfriders. Stagnant magic remained from
the Firstcomers' time. Two-Spear had a vision of Timmain and the original
massacre of the Firstcomers. It was also here that Kahvi was mortally wounded
and left for dead. Icetooth returned untold years later and retrieved Kahvi
from the magical pool.
HALFHILL HOLT
The Wolfriders denned here for seven hundred years, during Freefoot's
reign. They made their homes in caves dug into the clay of the hill. A
day's ride from Halfhill Holt was the Tall-Trees, a grove of old-growth
junipers. Halfhill Holt was abandoned after it was discovered by humans.
FATHER TREE HOLT (GOODTREE'S REST)
Goodtree founded this holt while on her Spirit Quest. She sculpted
several oaks into one large tree, adding many inner chambers as well as
underground storage chambers. The Father Tree Holt was the home of the
Wolfriders from Goodtree's time to Cutter's - probably at least 2000 years.
It was burned down by the Shaman of Gotara. Cutter and Skywise returned
seven years after the forest fire to find almost no regrowth of the forest.
After the Shards War Cutter and his band of Wolfriders returned to the
forest to rebuild Father Tree. At first efforts were hindered by the pool of bad magic remaining from
Madcoil's creation and death, but Suntop, channeling the thoughts of all elves, was able to
purge it, and Redlance regrew Father Tree Holt bigger than ever.
SORROW'S
END
Sorrow's End was founded by Savah's family, the Rootless Ones, shortly
after the arrival of the Firstcomers. Yurek, Savah's lifemate, rockshaped
the original well and the Bridge of Destiny. The Wolfriders lived at Sorrow's
End for seven years, until Cutter's quest began. Several of the Wolfriders
stayed behind, however, giving rise to a new tribe of Jackwolf Riders in
Sorrow's End. Sorrow's End endured for 20,000 years, protected from human
invasions by Ahdri's rockshaping abilities during the latter half of its
existence. Sorrow's End fell under the human's attack during the Shards
War. The Sun Folk escaped through Ahdri's tunnels to await the return of
the Palace.
THE FORBIDDEN GROVE HOLT
Discovered by Cutter and Skywise during the Original Quest, the Wolfriders
later founded a holt here. They survived the first winter by eating the
meat sealed in wrapstuff by the Preservers. Blue Mountain stood just beyond
the Forbidden Grove. The Wolfriders lived here for only three years, during
which time they fought a siege at Blue Mountain and defeated both Winnowill
and the Hoan-G'Tay-Sho attack.
THORNY
MOUNTAIN HOLT
After the Wolfriders were stranded in the New Land, Redlance set to
work making Thorny Mountain Holt, so named for the briar walls he created
to keep the humans out. This holt was different from all others in that
it was shaped high above the ground. The Wolfriders lived at Thorny Mountain
Holt for over five hundred years before they went into wrapsleep in the
Troll Caverns. After they awoke in the future, Redlance reshaped Thorny
Mountain Holt. They lived here for another six years before Grohmul Djun's
men cut down the forest.
THE TROLL CAVERNS
Not a holt per se, but the home to the Wolfriders during their 10,000
year sleep. Their wrapstuff cocoons were guarded by Timmain deep inside
Picknose's caves. Kahvi stayed with the trolls briefly while trying to
steal Cutter's cocoon. Picknose didn't exactly wlecome the Wolfriders into
his caves, still, elves and trolls were forced into interdependency while
they were stranded in the New Land. Picknose hosted the Cutter-Rayek challenge
in his tunnels, and Cutter's warriors used the tunnels to burrow under
the Citadel Mound during the Shards War.
HOWLING ROCK
Ember's Wolfriders founded this holt during the Shards War, only to
find Teir was already living there. The wolf-shaped rock seemed to hint
that the caves were made for the Wolfriders. After the war when the Wild
Hunt was formed, they came back to Howling Rock on a regular basis, leaving
only to track down the remnants of Winnowill's monsters. Angrif Djun discovered
the holt, and the Wild Hunt was forced to abandon Howling Rock once the
army began to march on them.
KHULKI'S MOUNTAIN
After being driven from Howling Rock, Ember's Wild Hunt made its home
on Khulki's Mountain. So far they have enjoyed forty years of peace, protected
in part by Yun's adopted son Khorbasi. We have seen only a brief glance
of it so far, but the forthcoming Mender and Recognition storylines will
surely show us more.
THE
FOREVERGREEN HOLT
The Forevergreen Holt was the most shortlived of the holts. It was
founded by Dart and his Jackwolf Riders during their time in the Forevergreen
forest. The holt was burned down by the fire started by Pei-lar's failed
attack on Door. Dart and his band had no choice but to flee in the Palace.
Since then the Forevergreen has grown back, and has seen the adventures
of Jethel, Chot, Windkin, Dodia, and her son No-Name. Recently Windkin
found two orphaned Wavedancers in the Forevergreen: Wavecatcher and Wavelet.
