As the forest burned down around them,
seventeen elves and fourteen wolves fled to the caverns of the trolls, and beyond...

These seventeen Wolfriders were the tribe that began the 20+ years of ElfQuest. The thing is, Warp and ElfQuest have not been exactly forthcoming when it comes to info on the original tribe. Yes, we know all the ins and outs of Cutter's family - the The Chief's Line. And we knew from the start that Treestump was the brother of Joyleaf. But who are Redlance's parents? Where did Woodlock come from? These seventeen elves must be very closely related, and yet in 20+ years we've only gotten the merest hints how they tie together. That Pike is Rain's son was revealed as a throwaway line in Hidden Years 5. Not until 1999 and "Wolfrider!" did Warp finally admit that Brownberry and Longbranch really were the parents of Nightfall. And what of all the others? Many fans have tried to decipher the family tree of the Original Tribe, with amazingly varied results.

Here is my attempt at tying in the Original Seventeen with their ancestors. I've taken a blend of straight EQ canon, guess-timates based on character appearance, and maybe a hint or two of wishful thinking. This is the best I can do - maybe someday ElfQuest's next special will prove me right, maybe it'll reveal a prequel secret that completely throws my - and others' - theories completely out the window. We'll have to wait and see.
