TEIR
Whotta babe. From the moment I first saw him, Rayek slowly began to
slide towards second place. Tall, dark, handsome, and the sweetest little thing to ever cross paths with the Wolfriders. He's endured being alone so long he doesn't quite know what to do in a tribe, yet he's willing to bend over backwards to be part of the Wild Hunt. But his loyalties are to his "Firehair" above all - when Ember was exiled from the Wild Hunt, he gave up packright - possibly forever - to be with her. And you have to love his animal-bonding. His best weapon is his army
of wolves.
SKYWISE
Rayek and Skywise tie for second place, but I'll give Skywise a bonus
point for not dabbling in evil. Given that he's been the EQ sex symbol
right from the start, it's hardly surprising he's the most popular character
out there. That michievous streak, that astronomy fascination - and underneath
it all this sensitive soul at times deeply troubled by the deep schism
between his beliefs and those of his tribe. I was delighted to see he finally
got his own special story in Wolfshadow (though I want to kill someone
for making him suffer so much in "Troll Games and Soulnames.")
RAYEK
He may be second to Teir on personality, but Rayek gets extra bonus
points for being my first ElfQuest love. I adored him right from Book One.
He's fiery, he's ruthless, he's head-over-heels for women he can never
have, and he hates Cutter beyond all reason. A tragic hero and a great villain,
all wrapped into one glorious package. I can never decide when I like him
more, when he's just glorying in being a hubristic bad guy who delights
in wreaking havoc for the Wolfriders, or when he's a tortured soul still
hopelessly in love with the woman who's the cause of all his misery.
PIKE
All Hail the King of Dreamberries! He's the happiest Wolfrider out
there, and yet the one Wolfrider who's suffered the most. He's lost lovemates, a lifemate, a son, a sister, a (probably) brother, his parents, and really every other family member he's ever had
(see Conspiracies). But he never loses
his smile. His joy in living is a testament to his inner strength. This
little omega-wolf turned Wild Hunt elder isn't nearly appreciated enough
by his comrades. His starring turn in Dreamtime was long overdue.
SKOT
He's cute, he's mean, and he's got a sex drive that
just won't quit. I love his outspoken-ness,
the way he's always testing the limits of Cutter and Strongbow's patience.
Frankly I would have liked to see this "low wolf" stop showing throat and
doing a little more "going for the throat." Why did they kill off such
a great guy? He still had so much more potential, only briefly seen in
Dreamtime.
SUNSTREAM
Or is it Suntop? I can never decide what to call him. After dropping into obscurity in the Forevergreen, he's back and he's all grownup. I don't like his new height one bit, but seeing him take another step towards becoming Master of the Palace is lots of fun.
SUST
Skot may be dead now, but his spirit carries on in
his little hellion of a cub. In his short life he's tamed a tuftcat, become
mortal enemies and best friends with Pool, and fought as a full-fledged
warrior in a day-long war. Now he's a hunter and a scout on Khulki's Mountain.
Sust is destined for great mischief.I only wish Wild Hunt would
devote more time to the clearly superior of its two cubs.
ZHANTEE
I admit it took me awhile to properly appreciate Zhantee. But it hit me like a stack of bricks one day and I haven't gotten him out of my mind since. He can shield; he's a total waterbaby; and he's still a recurring character despite being deader than Winnowill. Everyone in the tribe loves him - he even got Cutter to give him his soulname! I just wish he and Venka had Recognized.
SHALE
Skywise's honey of a daddy - I cannot believe they created him simply
to kill him off five or so pages later. He's just as sweet as Skywise,
with the most delightful shyness. Did I mention his utter devotion to his
lifemate? I'd really like to learn more about him. My guess is his parents
are Rain and Clearbrook's daughter (about whom we know absolutely nothing),
and I will stand by that belief until Warp tells us otherwise. (But they
won't, not for another twenty years. Look how long it took to finally get
proof that Longbranch and Brownberry were Nightfall's parents.)
RAIN
Pike's dad, and Shale's too by the looks of things. A gorgeous healer
dressed in the most becoming *chuckle* fashions. One of the coolest "elders"
the Wolfriders were ever fortunate enough to have. Plus, he's one of the
few Wolfriders to look good in face-fur. Why are the best characters
the ones in the background? Is Recognition defying its primary function and breeding out the A-list elves?
