101 Reasons to Love Rayek
1. The archetypal Tall-Dark-and-Handsome.
2. No wolf-blood.
3. Those eyes...
4. Those cheekbones...
5. Those *abs*.
6. He's got the legs to wear those cute Sorrow's End outfits.
7. His take-no-prisoners courting style.
8. Be your lifemate? Oh yes, please.
9. Who wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of those looks he's giving Leetah?
10. Luv that tan.
11. Rayek and Cutter GN#1: Seething hatred at first sight.
12. That sexy travel cloak of his.
13. Unlike Wolfriders, he doesn't think it's necessary to inflicting
agonizing pain and terror on your prey.
Nor does he need to murder something to feel his heart pound and his
blood sing.
14. He doesn't drink blood. And meat *does* taste better cooked.
15. Real men don't howl.
16. I always pictured him more a purring type, anyway.
17. He's immortal - Rayek for all eternity, can one think of a nicer thought?
18. No &%*@#$%* facefur! Ever! Hah!
19. Sooo deliciously brooding at the party Savah threw.
20. Tears on Leetah's shoulder in the novelisation of GN#1 (and she let him walk out?!).
21. He didn't sulk and wail when they took his sword away from him.
22. That cool McGuyverish thing he made out of his collar.
23. He's looks so adorably terrified hanging from the Bridge of Destiny
(and Leetah's only thinking of
Cutter?!) .
24. Look at that face when he loses the Trial! Just look at it! Does
he need a big hug or what? Can't you
feel the pathos in the air when he leaves at the end?
25. And still he gives Savah that little smile when she suggests a threesome.
"Yes, Savah it
is...unthinkable."
26. Rides off into the sunset, the true hero.
27. Charisma so potent, a weathered old skull is enough to throw Leetah into a fit.
28. Despite Leetah's vow to move on, she's still mourning in Blue Mountain (to Cutter's horror).
29. Despite being gone for most of the quest, he's still what we remember most. Cutter, who's Cutter?
30. What a comeback in GN#4! Just toss that silly hat off...and wow!
31. Against his better judgement he saves Cutter, enabling Elfquest
to continue for the next twenty years.
A little gratitude please, Cutter Kinseeker. You'd be a corpse right
now if not for Rayek. And an ugly one
too.
32. Look, he and Skywise are smiling at each other (well, almost). Come
on, Skywise, it's time to invest
in a new soul brother.
33. He's finally got his hair down.
34. He even looks good in bland earthtones (but stick to red, dear).
35. "Hmph, still thinks he shines brighter than the sun." Oh, but he
does, Treestump. Oh High Ones does
he ever.
36. Isn't that the cutest father-son relationship with Ekuar? If Cutter
had found Ekuar in the caves he
probably would have eaten him.
37. Rayek's a glider now! Ooh, the possibilities... Need I mention Cutter looks like an idiot flying.
38. Rayek had the idea to find the Palace long before the Wolfriders did.
39. He's so sweet he even offers to let Cutter take the credit to make Leetah happy (nah, he's bluffing.)
40. He lets Cutter sweat before he saves him from the trolls.
41. He checks his nails while Cutter's flying around ineffectually trying
to get the trolls. He checks his
nails! Is that class or what?
42. He stuffs a snowball down Ember's jacket.
43. Seven years later and he still hates Cutter.
44. He also seems to hate shirts (yum).
45. Here's where we separate the men from the wolves: Who would you
rather be with at the Go-Back
orgy? I ask you.
46. Who has more class at the Go-Back orgy? Note: Kahvi took up with
Cutter only because she's in
trauma because Rayek left her. That's all.
47. Even Cutter-loving Leetah is more than willing to trade-up!
48. "Rayek strains his powers to the limit, for these are the two beings
dearest to him in the world. He
would give all his strength to shield their somehow still innocent
eyes from the obscenity below." What a
babe.
49. "Selflessly, Rayek hefts a discarded blade to defend Leetah and
the vulnerable rock shaper..." And
we're supposed to think this guy's the villain?
50. He knows better than to put on that unflattering armour. I suppose
Two-Edge didn't bother to make
two Sun Village motif armour sets for him and Leetah. Thank High Ones.
51. Two words. "We're waiting...!"
52. And while Cutter's having a near panic attack stradling the bridge
over the chasm. Is that deliciously
cold-blooded or what? Suffer puppy, suffer.
53. Ow, ow! Clubbed by Two-Edge. Sympathy, sympathy.
54. He saves Ekuar, flying out of nowhere. Forget Superman, give me Rayek.
55. In the Palace for less than an hour and already he's decided he's moving in. Love that ambition.
56. Crying after Kahvi tells him her baby died. We can just hear his heart breaking.
57. "A little girl it was..." Is he prime Daddy material or what?
58. Ooh, that sexy red travel outfit.
59. Ooh, that sexy red travel outfit comes off...
60. Ten years and counting and he still hates Cutter!
61. Even Winnowill can't say she's unaffected by our dear airwalker.
Don't tell me she's just using him,
that chick is into it.
62. Forget Skywise and Aroree! Aerial sex with Rayek, think about it!
63. He's in love with her already and all she cares about is lupine
genocide. And all she cares about is
lupine genocide...? Winnowill, you idiot!
64. Who wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of those looks he's giving Winnowill?
65. We can't even fault him even if he *is* acting a little insane in
Kings of the Broken Wheel. He's not to
blame, sleeping with Winnowill seems to make everyone crazy!
66. That "you never cared for children" speech Cutter gives him when
Rayek wants to adopt Suntop -
look at that face. Someone just got his heart pounded into dust!
67. His hair's up again. How can I choose?
68. He even looks good in that silly buckle outfit. Ahnshen, what *were* you thinking?
69. Unlike Cutter and the nut-mash speech, Rayek's man enough to handle
a healer full-time. In fact, he
seems to be a magnet for healers if you think about it...
70. Awww...that little bonding with Suntop in the New Land, a follow
up to his adoption request back in
the Forbidden Grove. You two better be very good friends in the years
to come, do you hear me?
71. That deliciously condecending look he gives Cutter while discussing
the plight of the High Ones in the
future. "I pity you..."
72. His concern for the High Ones and his conviction in his plan is
so addictive we can't really blame him
for stealing the Palace. Besides, it just about destroyed Cutter. How
can you argue with that?
73. Ow, ow, Leetah zapped him. Sympathy, please, sympathy. And when
the poor doll was just trying to
spare the her sight of Cutter three thousand years old, wrinkled, senile
and impotent (a scary thought
by anyone's standards). I'm sure Leetah's a wee biased, but honey,
that is not how you react to such a
thoughtful and considerate friend.
74. His actions led to Skywise giving up his wolf-blood. Yeah, you're
a little upset about Cutter being
presumed dead, and you're blaming him for everything, and *right now*
you want to run our honey
through with your sword, but give it time, Skywise. You'll be thanking
him as soon as you see what
facefur does to your friends.
75. Ten thousands years ahead in time. A plan to restore the glory of
what elves once were and save all
those dear to him. And yet instead of the betterment of the elfin race
and the safety of the Sun Folk,
Rayek just wants to see his girlfriend again. Whatever you think of
Winnowill, you can't argue with those
priorities.
76. I swear he would have kissed her if he hadn't decided to hypnotise her. Elves don't kiss, hah!
77. He's only known Venka for about five minutes and they're bonding
already. Aren't they the most
adorable family?
78. Ten thousand years since GN#1 and...(you guessed it) he *still* hates Cutter.
79. HY#8. He's horrified when he hurts the buck he's trying to kill.
Unable to give him a painless death
he'd rather heal the buck than finish him off. (He did not howl. You
can't prove he howled. Cutter
somehow dubbed that howl in via complicated audio-video techonolgy
he purchased from Two-Edge.
You can't prove he howled.)
80. Rayek as a baby in HY#9. We knew he was an adorable baby, but it's nice to have proof.
81. Rayek as a kid in HY#9. Ow, ow, he lost his arm briefly. Tragic
childhood memories are always good
pathos. Little wonder he's not fond of wolfriders. The probably remind
him of the jackal attack.
82. Hiding behind the rocks in HY#9. So that's how he got Leetah's attention...
83. Feel free to try and get *my* attention...
84. HY#9 1/2. He's willing to let Cutter nearly kill him so they can
start over again on the right foot.
Double bonus: we get to see him being adorably selfless AND watch him
waste Cutter in unarmed
combat.
85. And BTW, we get to see him strip.
86. And BTW, he looks *gorgeous* in the second-last panel just after he's been healed.
87. And BTW, he won!
88. He's the only one really concerned when the Palace is destroyed
and the Shards are stolen. Cutter
wants to go on a hunt. A hunt!
89. The new Shards outfit. The red hooded outfit. I repeat: Red. Hooded. Outfit.
90. Can't you feel the pain when he finds out his ex is sleeping with
Grohmul Djun? Holy Pathos,
Batman. We all want him to be happy, we really do. And yet...he looks
so nice suffering.
91. That plea to Winnowill on the astral plane in Shards #1. How can she resist?
92. Especially since his representation on the astral plane seems to
go in for those skimpy Sorrow's End
outfits. Winnowill! How can you say no to those abs?
93. He flies, he shields, he zaps any and all foes with those wicked
magic blasts. And Winnowill, for all
her airs, still can't have a conversation with him where she doesn't
mention that fabulous body of his.
Why fight it, Winnie. You know you want him.
94. That whole mission to steal the Scroll of Colours. A glider with
style and class like no other. A great
sympathy shot when Winnowill zaps him. (ow!) And look how he puts everything
else aside to rescue
Venka. "Not for Palace and Scroll together would I trade you!" Awww!
95. Isn't he a dream sneaking through the Djun's palace?
96. And still he's intent on trying to reform Winnowill. All right,
let's consider this: he's hopelessly in love
with her. He tells her that every chance he gets. He's willing to forgive
her everything she's done. He's
willing to share mastery of the Palace with her. He's the only one
who believes there's still good in her.
Plus...he's Rayek! And she's turning him down again? Winnowill, you're
a babe, but you need a lobotomy
in the worse way.
97. While Cutter is wasting everyone's time skulking around the city
letting his tribe get killed off one by
one Rayek's battling with Winnowill to keep the secrets of the palace
from falling into enemy hands.
98. Mender heals him. He's back, and sexier than ever.
99. He sacrifices himself for the Palace, locking Winnowill inside himself
to keep her from infecting the
Shards. And Cutter does nothing beyond gasp "what have you done" and
later is "disturbed by Rayek's
lack of protest" when Skywise becomes Master of the Palace? Forget
Timmain and grovel before Rayek,
you worm. He just saved the entire elfin race, and all generations,
past, present and future from
Winnowill's evil. To say nothing of the Pini empire itself. Grovel,
I say.
100. Joke's on you Cutter...you're on the shelf and Rayek has his own series.
101. Rayek Admiration Society for Humans...take that, Cutter!
